Robin Carnahan campaign mirrors Coakley’s failed effort
January 20th, 2010
JEFFERSON CITY— One year after the inauguration of Barack Obama, Republicans, Independents, and even Democrats turned out en masse to vote for conservative problem-solver Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Given the striking similarities between the campaigns of Martha Coakley and Robin Carnahan, the Massachusetts results foreshadow trouble for Robin Carnahan’s chances in Missouri.
Martha Coakley was roundly criticized for her decision to disappear from public view while Scott Brown worked tirelessly—meeting voters and travelling the state. Similarly, in Missouri, Robin Carnahan has refused to hold a single campaign news conference since she announced her candidacy almost one year ago.
But the parallels don’t stop there. The same liberal groups that desperately tried to bail out Martha Coakley are also actively engaged in attempting to purchase Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat for Robin Carnahan.
“Scott Brown’s victory put Robin Carnahan on notice,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “Robin Carnahan is running to be a rubberstamp for the big-government agenda of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, and she has enlisted the same liberal groups that tried in vain to rescue Martha Coakley. But as we have seen, Americans across the nation and in Missouri, are rejecting the Carnahan-Coakley positions on the issues and their approach to campaigning.”
Below are a few of the common links between the campaigns of Robin Carnahan and Martha Coakley:
League of Conservation Voters: For months, the radical environmental group has been airing misleading attack ads against Roy Blunt in a transparent attempt to boost Carnahan’s campaign—and Carnahan has done nothing to stop them. The ads attack Roy Blunt’s pro-Missouri vote against cap and tax. In total, the League of Conservation Voters has spent more than $750,000 on Carnahan’s behalf. In Massachusetts, the LCV launched a last-minute $350,000 ad buy in a failed attempt to save Coakley’s floundering campaign.
EMILY’s List: The pro-abortion group Emily’s List has bundled more than $200,000 for Robin Carnahan during the 2010 cycle for her support for abortion on demand, taxpayer funding for abortion and the so-called Freedom of Choice Act which would eliminate pro-life laws in states like Missouri. In Massachusetts, they bundled more than $125,000 for Martha Coakley, and spent an additional $250,000 on radio ads on her behalf.
ACORN: Robin Carnahan’s long-time cozy relationship with ACORN was made clear by documents obtained by the Missouri Republican Party. These email communications between Carnahan’s staff and ACORN officials detail meetings in her office, events, research requests, and more—what ACORN called a ‘great team effort.’ In Massachusetts, Coakley has also touted an “A+” score that ACORN gave her.
Council for a Livable World: Carnahan has accepted an endorsement from the Council for a Livable World, a far-left anti-national defense group. The CLW is even raising money for her campaign. In Massachusetts, Coakley also accepted an endorsement from the group.
Teamsters: Early last year, Robin Carnahan was endorsed by the Teamsters union (and quickly found herself embroiled in controversy after she ducked several questions about her support for the elimination of the secret ballot in union elections—a position she acknowledged several days later). In Massachusetts, Coakley also received the support of the Teamsters, and she was up-front about her support for so-called card check legislation.
