Jefferson City - Claire McCaskill told the Kansas City Star on November 29, 2007, that she would comply with a request for e-mails from her Auditor and Senate offices, but nearly 10 months later, McCaskill has failed to respond to the Sunshine Law request. McCaskill claimed yesterday on This Week with George Stephanopoulos that she believes "honor comes with honesty" yet McCaskill has been dishonest with Missourians and the media by saying she would turn over e-mails and then refusing to do what she said.

"Claire McCaskill likes to talk about honesty but she has been dishonest with Missourians, she has been dishonest with the Kansas City Star and she is making a mockery of the Sunshine Law by not responding to this request," Tina Hervey said. "McCaskill should stop the phony talk about honesty and produce the e-mails we requested as she claimed she would. Democrats like Claire McCaskill like to pay lip service to the notion of open government, but they never walk the walk."

McCaskill’s Timeline of Dishonesty

October 4, 2006 –"If my walk doesn’t match my talk," she (McCaskill) said, "then shame on me and don’t vote for me again, but I want to be held accountable. I expect to be held accountable and I will not disappoint you." (Dave Catanese, KY3-TV)

November 13, 2007 – Following McCaskill’s assertions about how the governor’s office handles e-mails, the Missouri Republican Party filed a Sunshine Law request seeking McCaskill’s state emails for her last 60 days as auditor to see if she holds herself to the same standards she holds others to. The request also seeks e-mails McCaskill sent and received since she became a U.S. Senator through November 13, 2007.

November 29, 2007 — The Kansas City Star reported that "McCaskill said she was complying" with the MRP request.

November 30, 2007 - September 14, 2008 – Despite McCaskill’s claim that she "was complying" with the request for e-mails, McCaskill has not produced the requested e-mails.

The MRP has asked McCaskill to produce copies of emails, deleted or undeleted, that she sent or received in the last 60 days she held the office of Auditor of the state of Missouri. A copy of the request was also sent to the current state Auditor and those same documents are being sought from Auditor Montee.

Additionally, the MRP is requesting that McCaskill make available to them and to the citizens of Missouri copies of all of her U.S. Senate office’s emails that have been sent or received since she took office through the date of the original request, November 13, 2007.
