The Irony Of It All: Nixon Funnels Money Through Committees
April 16th, 2008
Jefferson City - When the Missouri Supreme Court reinstated limits on campaign contributions, Charles Hatfield, former Nixon campaign manager and political guru, praised the ruling saying, "People who are giving that kind of money are looking for something. That’s what bothers me.†To add insult to injury, Jay Nixon tanked the defense of the law and rolled over for his buddy Hatfield who was “fighting†him on the other side of the issue.
But just like Jay Nixon, Hatfield doesn’t mind saying one thing in public and doing the complete opposite in private. Listed as treasurer for a new committee, the Economic Growth Council, is Charles Hatfield. With the bulk of the funding for this committee appearing to come from casinos, stem cell proponents and trial lawyers, the April report disclosed nearly $500,000 in donations that ran thru political party committees into the campaigns of Jay Nixon and Chris Koster. Nixon and Hatfield’s charade make perfectly clear that they have no qualms about taking enormous sums of money from special interests and funneling them into political campaigns, which is exactly what the law they fought to overturn was meant to prevent.
“Missourians were done a disservice by Jay Nixon and Chuck Hatfield. Their coordinated effort led to the overturning of a law that injected transparency into our campaign finance system,†said Tina Hervey, communications director. “Any assertions by Nixon that he supports campaign finance limits are ludicrous in light of his pal Hatfield setting up committees to funnel he and Chris Koster enormous sums of campaign cash.â€
