JEFFERSON CITY - With Jay Nixon’s witch hunt committee crumbling at warp speed under public scrutiny, his newest addition to the panel has gone to court to oppose the governor’s efforts to protect Missourians from sexual predators, home invaders and convicted murderers.

Chet Pleban, described today by his hometown newspaper The St. Louis Post-Dispatch as someone who craves the spotlight by taking on “controversial” clients in “high-profile” cases, has fought to allow sex offenders to live near schools, opposed a law that allows Missourians to protect themselves in their homes and challenged capital punishment of convicted murderers.

In May of this year, Pleban fought a state law modeled after Jessica’s Law prohibiting sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school or day care center. He also publicly criticized the state’s Castle Doctrine that permits Missourians to protect themselves against home intruders. And Pleban also represented a convicted murderer who challenged Missouri’s method of capital punishment.

“Even though Jay Nixon’s partisan witch hunt committee is in a tailspin with the resignation of Max Knust, he still manages to find a controversial attorney like Chet Pleban who in court has opposed the governor’s commitment to protecting Missourians against pedophiles, criminals and convicted murderers,” said Paul Sloca, communications director for the Missouri Republican Party. “This is yet another attempt by Jay Nixon to salvage the illusion of independence for his tainted committee and true to form, Nixon just can’t do it.”

The selection of Pleban comes after Knust stepped down when his links to Nixon’s campaign treasurer Craig Hosmer were exposed by the Missouri Republican Party. Meanwhile, Nixon’s witch hunt continues under a cloud of partisanship after the MRP revealed that panel members Mel Fisher and Eric Wilhoit are both self-described Democrats.

“This panel is not independent and Max Knust’s hasty resignation proves that. Unfortunately, replacement Chet Pleban’s record of opposing this governor’s priorities in court raises another set of serious questions that Nixon must address,” Sloca said.
