Democrat Claims a Fraud; Facts Are Nixon Took Ameren Cash During Probe
June 26th, 2006
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Democrats have perpetrated one of the greatest political frauds in recent Missouri history in a desperate effort to hide the fact that Jay Nixon took what amounts to a bribe from Ameren while supposedly representing the state in the Taum Sauk Dam case.
Democrats tried this past weekend to make wild accusations about Gov. Matt Blunt’s commitment to the Taum Sauk investigation. The facts are that Gov. Blunt called for the investigation and Jay Nixon took more than $19,000 in laundered political contributions from Ameren even while supposedly engaged in an investigation of the company.
“Jay Nixon broke his oath as the state’s attorney the minute he started cashing campaign checks from Ameren. There is no amount of political rhetoric or false accusations by the Missouri Democrat Party that can change that,” said Paul Sloca, communications director for the Missouri Republican Party. “While Gov. Blunt was calling for an investigation on behalf of Missourians, Jay Nixon was knowingly breaking the public trust and the law by taking money from Ameren while he was investigating them.”
The reservoir collapse in southeast Missouri sent more than 1 billion gallons of water rushing through nearby Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, devastating the area and injuring a family of five. The Department of Natural Resources operates the park and regulates streams that were damaged. And while the Governor was seeking to get to the bottom of the collapse, Jay Nixon was scraping the bottom of the political and legal barrel by hoarding campaign cash from Ameren and delaying potential action against the utility.
“It’s no coincidence that this investigation ground to a standstill not long after Jay Nixon started collecting money from Ameren. Nixon gave the cash back after he got caught but that does not excuse the crime. Democrats can try all they want to cloud the issue but the bottom line is that Jay Nixon acted unethically, unprofessionally and illegally,” Sloca said. “What a disgrace and what a disservice to the citizens of Missouri.”
