Group Launches False Intimidation Plan In Missouri

ST. LOUIS - Ripping a page straight from the Democratic Party voter intimidation
playbook, America Coming Together today is distributing racially-charged
fliers designed to mislead the African-American community about Republican
commitments to getting out the vote.

One day
after the discovery of a 66-page Democratic National Committee Election Day
manual which encourages Democrat poll workers to
"launch a pre-emptive strike"
on voter intimidation charges, even
where none exist, ACT distributed fliers that contains a picture of civil
rights riots in the 1960s above the headline: "This
is what they used to do to keep us from voting."

Yvonne
Hunter, a member of the St. Louis Board of Elections, was scheduled to meet
this afternoon with elections officials to raise concerns about the flier,
which makes other false claims that contradict long-standing Republican
support for the rights of minority voters.

"Some are trying to use the conflicts of the past to
affect the future and I find this inflammatory and insulting to all the
citizens of the City of St. Louis. This is wrong, completely wrong,"

Hunter said. "The St. Louis Board of Elections has
done everything to make sure everyone who is registered is allowed to vote.
Republicans believe that everyone who is legally entitled to vote should
vote one time."

The ACT
flier claims that Republicans:

  • "?put phony cops at polling place - but only in
    African American neighborhoods."

  • "?make African American voters stand in line for
hours, then turn them away from the polls, like they did in St. Louis."

  • "Now John Ashcroft is trying to prevent African
Americans from registering to vote at all."

"The Democrats have made it clear that they have a
plan to use any means necessary to try and disenfranchise voters and this is
another disturbing example of that,"
said Paul Sloca, communications
director for the Missouri Republican Party. "This
kind of false advertising aimed at African Americans is clearly an attempt
to intimidate and mislead voters. It is disgusting and wrong and we call on
ACT to cease the distribution of these materials in the African American
community in St. Louis."
