Remembering 9-11

This past week we all paused to remember the brave men and women who lost their lives to terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. As we look back on the 5th anniversary of this tragedy, we are reminded just how far we have come since that terrible day that our country changed forever. Our Republican leaders have stood together in firm resolve to ensure that we continue to stand tough against the terrorists, monitoring their activities and using impeccable intelligence to thwart any future attack attempts. As we continue to move forward in these trying times, may we be blessed with strength and resolve to stand together as Americans and show the world that we will not allow anyone anywhere to threaten our freedom.

Talent Travels Door to Door

This week Senator Jim Talent took his campaign to the streets, greeting residents at their doors in Springfield and Joplin. Dozens of Talent supporters joined the Senator to canvass neighborhoods across the area, spreading the word of Senator Talent’s many accomplishments for Missourians.

Since his election in 2002, Senator Talent has visited all of Missouri’s 114 counties, many of them several times. In the month of August alone Senator Talent made trips to 50 Missouri counties to meet with the people and discuss his work to increase veterans’ benefits, raise awareness and treatment funding for sickle cell disease and discuss the common sense, conservative values he shares with Missourians.

"Donated" Political Workers Questioned by GOP

The Missouri Republican Party Thursday filed Sunshine Law requests with officials in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas to assess the veracity of Claire McCaskill’s claim that Democrat leaders aren’t donating public employees for partisan political activity but instead are being recruited as election day judges.

Last week, McCaskill commented publicly about an apparent plan to use a very specific number of St. Louis and Kansas City public employees for Election Day activities: “….here (St. Louis) and in Kansas City the mayor and the county executive have donated 150 employees to work on the election on Election Day,” McCaskill said.

The rules of Jackson County, St. Louis County and the cities of St. Louis and Kansas City bar employees from participating in political campaigns and specifically prohibit ‘coercion’ of any taxpayer funded employees to participate in partisan political activities. This is just one of many troubling comments recently made by McCaskill.

This week Michael Jensen of the Sikeston Standard Democrat weighed in on the inappropriate McCaskill comment made last week in regards to the response by President Bush in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Click here to see his editorial.

Senator Champion Speaks Out, McCaskill “Neanderthal” Comment Insulting

Senator Norma Champion spoke out against the “pointless personal attacks” lobbed at the entire state Senate by Claire McCaskill. Last week at an environmentalist fundraiser, McCaskill placed her foot squarely in her mouth as she loudly proclaimed, “I know what the Senate is. Okay, it is not good. I know what the Senate is, I mean it really isn’t, it is such, it is such a vast wasteland of Neanderthals.” McCaskill goes on to launch an unprovoked attack against Senator Champion, calling her “abysmal.”

In a press release Senator Champion said, “While I am outraged that Claire McCaskill would make such a pointless personal attack, I am more disappointed that she is diverting from critical issues affecting our state. I should say, however, that Claire McCaskill’s remarks should give hardworking people in southwest Missouri reason to question whether she has the temperament necessary to serve respectably in the United States Senate.”

Congressman Akin Applauds Boeing Growler Roll-Out

After much work and constant diligence, Congressman Todd Akin spoke at the official roll out of Boeing’s new attack aircraft, the EA-18 Growler. The United States Navy is expected to purchase approximately 90 of the aircraft, which will spur production on Boeing’s F-18 assembly line in St. Louis for many years, creating jobs and additional economic activity in the region.

Congressman Akin remarked, “From the beginning of this project my office has made the development of the EA-18 Growler one of our priorities. I am extremely happy to see this aircraft, which will greatly enhance our nation’s war fighting capability and increase the survivability of Navy aviators, finally come to fruition.”

McCaskill Nursing Home Audit Tainted by Personal Interests

Claire McCaskill’s politically motivated nursing home audit released this week fails to mention the serious ethical questions surrounding her handling of nursing home issues as state auditor because of her husband’s significant financial interests in the nursing home industry.

McCaskill promised Missourians in 1998 that she would hold bad nursing homes accountable but that all changed when she married Joseph Shepard and they became a team. According to a political ad at the time, she pledged: “I'm Claire McCaskill. Nothing is more frightening than the thought of our loved ones being abused. That's why, as state auditor, I'll stop the payments of all state funds to any nursing home that allows elderly abuse. They'll not only face prosecution, they'll lose millions of dollars in state funding. Because our parents deserve better."

Meanwhile, Shepard’s nursing homes have been cited for serious violations against senior citizens, while allowing him to amass a taxpayer-subsidized fortune that included $3 million in payments received as recently as 2004. Also in 2004, 26 plaintiffs filed a wrongful death suit against a Shepard senior care facility in St. Louis. That case is currently pending with Shepard personally named as a defendant.

Senator Talent has continued to fight for Missouri seniors by backing the Medicare Part D plan. Seniors in Missouri and across the country have saved thousands on their prescription drugs by enrolling in the plan. Click here to read more about Senator Talent’s stance on Medicare Part D.
