Republicans Shine in Primary Election

The primary election this week was a huge success for Republicans across our state. Senator Jim Talent received over 88 percent of the Republican vote while his opponent Claire McCaskill only garnered 81 percent against a widely unknown opponent. Platte County Auditor Sandra Thomas will be our Republican candidate for state auditor unless a recount dictates otherwise. Representative Jack Jackson has indicated he will exercise his statutory right to request a recount because of the close primary. This was a hard-fought race, and no matter what the result, an excellent candidate will represent our party. Both Thomas and Jackson would do a wonderful job as our next auditor, ensuring that the past record of politicizing the office would go by the wayside and accountability would be returned to the auditor’s office.

Every one of our incumbent candidates for the House and Senate was successful, showing that Missourians see and appreciate the effective leadership shown by our current elected officeholders. We would also like to congratulate all of the candidates who won contests in open seats. We have a group of highly qualified, highly motivated candidates for the November ballot that embody the common sense, conservative values of Missourians.

2006 Missouri State Fair Underway

Thursday kicked off the annual Missouri State Fair. For 10 days Missourians from across the state will flock to Sedalia to enjoy the exhibits, food and rides that the State Fair offers each year. Last night Lt. Governor Peter Kinder served as Master of Ceremonies and many of our Republican candidates participated in the State Fair Parade. Next Thursday, August 17 Governor Blunt, Senator Talent and many of our elected Republican leaders will be visiting the fair for Governor's, Legislators', and Judges' Day, when Governor Blunt will be hosting the Governor's Ham Breakfast.

While you are there be sure to visit the Missouri Republican Party (MRP) tent where you can pick up information about many of our candidates running for office this November, grab a cold drink of water and register to win prizes that will be given away each day. Joy Gerstein has done an amazing job again this year preparing and organizing our booth. Each day a different group of Republican supporters will serve as the MRP hosts and volunteer to man the tent. So, be sure to stop by and say hello.

Governor Blunt to Serve on National Math and Science Task Force

Governor Matt Blunt has been asked to serve on the National Governor’s Association (NGA) Innovation America Task Force because of his ongoing efforts to promote math and science learning in our state. This year Governor Blunt hosted the first math and science summit to bring educators and other stakeholders together to discuss the challenges in the math and science fields and identify solutions for the current situation.

The bipartisan task force will work to enhance math and science learning and provide educators and students with the tools they need to improve achievement in these areas. Also serving on the task force is Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah.

Governor Blunt said, “It is an honor to be asked to participate on this task force and represent our state as the group works to identify ways to increase our nation’s capacity for innovation and proficiency in math and science. I am pleased that Missouri is being recognized for our efforts to make education a priority in order to gain quality jobs and enhanced opportunities for our citizens.”

Local Processors Stand to Benefit with Help of Congressman Blunt

This week Congressman Roy Blunt announced that he will introduce legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that will allow local meat processors to sell their products across state lines. Currently an antiquated 40 year-old law prohibits local processors from competing for business in neighboring states. However, a 2005 study found that state inspection programs are “at least equal to” federal inspections and because of this there is no reason local processors should be so restricted when selling their products.

Congressman Blunt said, “Our local meat processors need an even playing field to compete with USDA-inspected meat processors and 30 foreign meat producing countries who sell their meats freely across the nation. Our locally produced, state-inspected meats are just as safe and, I believe, of a better quality.”

Among those supporting the legislation are the Missouri Association of Meat Processors, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and the American Association of Meat Processors.
