In 1998, Claire McCaskill ran an ad falsely attacking her opponent for unpaid taxes. The ad ends with a brutal tagline that will undoubtedly come back to haunt her, “Unpaid taxes and wasted tax dollars. Missouri deserves better.”
We have unearthed the script, but the video has been lost to time. It exists somewhere, we just don’t know where—and that’s where you come in.

THE SCRIPT
Here’s the full description of the ad from the St Louis Post-Dispatch (August 2, 1998): Thirty-second spot begins with a shot of opponent Steve Conway’s ad, then cuts to footage of McCaskill in a courtroom. “Steve Conway’s attacking Claire McCaskill,” the announcer says. “The truth is, Claire McCaskill’s one of Missouri’s most effective prosecutors, with violent crime down 75 percent in Kansas City. So why the negative campaigning? Because Steve Conway doesn’t want us to know he failed to pay thousands of dollars in back taxes, even though he’s a tax lawyer. And on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen, Steve Conway wouldn’t vote to stop city employees from getting sick leave bonuses they didn’t earn. Steve Conway. Unpaid taxes and wasted tax dollars. Missouri deserves better.”
