Extreme Makeover: Claire McCaskill edition

December 15, 2010

Despite history of support for Obama agenda, McCaskill now masquerading as a fiscal moderate

Claire McCaskill claimed this week that she will oppose the Democrat’s recently-unveiled, $1.1 trillion spending splurge—but given her history of support for the failed stimulus and other wasteful bills, McCaskill’s sudden concern for out-of-control spending is simply not believable.

“After two years as one of the most ardent supporters of Barack Obama’s reckless and irresponsible agenda, Claire McCaskill is now trying to undergo an ‘extreme makeover’ to make people forget about her votes to mandate hundreds of billions of dollars in new wasteful spending,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “But no matter how hard McCaskill attempts to fool voters by backtracking, distorting the truth, and pretending to be a fiscal moderate, Missourians will see through her disguise.  The truth is simple: Claire McCaskill has supported some of the most wasteful spending bills over the last several years, and nothing can change that.”

Over the past two years, McCaskill has been one of the staunchest supporters of Barack Obama’s reckless liberal agenda, including the failed stimulus bill and the health care takeover.  McCaskill traveled the state promoting these bills, despite the fact that they were overflowing with wasteful spending and pet projects.  Problems with the stimulus bill have been well-documented, and several are included in this Congressional report detailing 100 wasteful spending projects across the U.S.

It is clear that Missourian’s aren’t buying McCaskill’s ‘extreme makeover.’  In fact, a post-election poll conducted by Public Policy Polling shows that McCaskill is the second most vulnerable Senator up for reelection in 2012. The poll, available here, puts McCaskill’s disapproval ratings at a overwhelming 53%.
