Sowers panics, backtracks on his support of Obamacare
August 6, 2010
Ever since a respected national columnist wrote that Democrat Tommy Sowers “has no chance of winning,” Sowers has quickly attempted to move to the right—and unbelievably, he is now casting himself as a conservative. Sowers’ latest ploy is to claim that he supported Proposition C, which passed with more than 71% of the vote on Tuesday. But he fails to mention that he actually supported the passage of the Obama-Pelosi federal health care bill, individual mandate and all.
“Tommy Sowers unequivocally supported the Obama-Pelosi takeover of our health care system. He did not object to any portion of the legislation—in fact, he embraced it on the day Nancy Pelosi rammed it through the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “Sowers knows that he is in big trouble for backing the health care bill, and now he is panicking and scrambling to atone for his support of an incredibly unpopular piece of legislation in the 8th District and across Missouri. But no amount of backtracking can change the fact that on this, and many other important issues, Tommy Sowers will be a reliable vote for Nancy Pelosi’s agenda.”
Politico is reporting that Sowers claims that he joined the overwhelming number of Missourians who sent Washington a very public message on Tuesday by voting YES on Proposition C.
But according to the SE Missourian, November 8, 2009, “Sowers said he would vote for” the federal health care bill, which included the individual mandate.
Proposition C passed in every county in the 8th District by stunning margins. In one county (Butler), 84% of residents voted YES on Proposition C.
“After all the support Tommy Sowers has given to Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama on the federal health care bill and repeal of don’t ask don’t tell, and after all the money he has taken from radical special interest groups and Hollywood liberals, he cannot turn around and fool citizens of the 8th District into believing that he is a conservative,” said Smith.
