Where is weak-on-defense Robin Carnahan on Afghanistan?
December 1, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY—After months of dithering, President Obama will finally announce his plans to send additional troops to Afghanistan—but he is facing a backlash from within his own party. In light of Obama’s speech, Missourians deserve to know where Robin Carnahan stands on the troop surge.
“Robin Carnahan has taken several cursory trips overseas in an attempt to bolster her foreign policy credentials, but they have done nothing to repair her weak-on-defense positions,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “By remaining silent, Carnahan has made it clear that she stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Barack Obama in supporting the closure of Guantanamo Bay and allowing terrorists to be tried in civilian courts in the United States. Carnahan, who has accepted the endorsement of the radical anti-missile defense Council for a Livable World, is now remaining silent on the President’s plan to send additional troops to Afghanistan. It is beyond time for her to begin the substantive policy discussion that she promised more than 300 days ago.”
Despite doing her best to conceal her beliefs from the public, Carnahan’s liberal allies and her silence on the issues have shined the spotlight on her weak-on-defense positions:
Endorsed by the radical Council for a Livable World: Carnahan has been endorsed by the Council for a Livable World, a radical anti-missile defense group. The CLW is raising money on Carnahan’s behalf, and their endorsement lays out her weak-on-defense positions:
“Carnahan believes that the U.S. should help lead the world toward nuclear disarmament. She supports President Obama’s goal of working toward a world free of nuclear weapons and advocates bilateral reductions of nuclear weapons by the United States and Russia.
“She supports ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the President’s goal of securing and retrieving vulnerable nuclear-weapons usable materials worldwide. While she supports ensuring the safety and viability of our nuclear deterrent, she opposes building a new generation of nuclear weapons.”
Closing Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention facility: When asked, Carnahan responded with a classic non-statement meant to keep Missourians in the dark: “There’s pretty wide consensus that we need to get past Guantanamo…We need to do things that reflect our values.” (St. Louis Beacon, May 11, 2009) But this was clearly a thinly veiled attempt to hide her position in support of closing the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention facility.
Bringing terrorists to the United States: Missourians do not want terrorists in the United States—and for good reason. There have been several cases in which the prosecution of terrorists in open court in the United States has tipped off others about U.S. counter-terrorism tactics, putting Americans in grave danger. By refusing to speak out, Robin Carnahan has made it clear that she supports the Obama Administration’s recently-revealed plans to try the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in a civilian court in the very city he attacked.
