Carnahan refuses to explain support for radical health care bill

November 11, 2009

JEFFERSON CITY—In a brief interview cut short by nervous staffers, Robin Carnahan once again defied reporters in an attempt to conceal from Missourians her support of a government takeover of health care.  It was another shameless display of equivocation from a candidate who has tied herself to increasingly unpopular Washington Democrats like Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

But Carnahan, whose evasiveness has become a source of frustration for the Missourians she seeks to represent in the Senate, let her guard down long enough to claim that she was “excited” about Nancy Pelosi’s 1,990 page, $1.2 trillion bill and called it an important “first step.”

“While Robin Carnahan said she is ‘excited’ that the nation is debating this issue, she utterly refuses to explain or defend the reasons behind her support for such an egregious government takeover of our health care system,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party.  “The Carnahan-backed destruction of the private market, tax increases, Medicare cuts, and bureaucratic excesses are so outrageous that the bill received bipartisan opposition when Nancy Pelosi rammed it through Congress.”

Robin Carnahan also tried to take a pass on another aspect of the legislation that has divided Democrats.  She called the pro-life Stupak Amendment—sponsored by Rep. Bart Stupak and supported by 64 Democrats and 176 Republicans to prohibit taxpayer money from being used to subsidize abortions—a “distraction,” but not surprisingly, she refused to support the pro-life amendment or articulate a coherent plan or position on the issue.

But tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from pro-abortions groups—including Planned Parenthood, NARAL-Pro Choice Missouri, and the National Organization for Women (NOW)—have once again belied Carnahan’s attempts to disguise her extreme pro-abortion position.  In addition, the liberal Emily’s List reports Carnahan has accepted more than $200,000 from them in 2009.

“Once again, Robin Carnahan’s ties to liberal organizations like ACORN, the SEIU, and pro-abortion groups have exposed her positions that are out-of-touch with Missourians,” said Smith.  “In less than one year, our state will send a new Senator to Washington to stand up and fight for the best interests of Missourians.  Robin Carnahan’s repeated attempts to cover up her liberal positions make it clear that she is not ready for prime time.”
