Lt. Governor Peter Kinder’s Statement on Health Care
October 28, 2009
CAPE GIRARDEAU—Following the health care debate between former Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Governor Howard Dean, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, who was in attendance, issued the following statement:
“Despite Barack Obama’s campaign promise that all health care negotiations would be televised on C-SPAN, Democrats are now meeting in secret so no one can see the bill they are writing. Tonight’s debate between former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Governor Howard Dean is one of the few opportunities Missourians will have to hear both sides of the debate.
“Speaker Gingrich effectively made the case that the Democrats’ planned government-takeover of our health care system is too costly and too burdensome. Real reform can only be achieved by giving Americans more choices and allowing more competition. Howard Dean sided with liberal like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, whose plan could bankrupt the state of Missouri.
“Democrats claim that their health care bill would not add to the skyrocketing deficit, but they are not being straightforward about the costs. Washington liberals want to shift the costs to states like Missouri—forcing us to pay an estimated $450 million more every year. Missouri simply cannot afford such an unfunded mandate, especially in this economy. Just today, state officials announced $204 million cuts, in addition to $430 million in cuts earlier this year. Clearly, there is no room in our budget to cover Washington’s experiment with our health care system.
“Governors from across the nation, Republicans and Democrats, have united in opposition to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid health care scheme, because it would wreak havoc on state budgets. Unfortunately, Jay Nixon has remained silent. I urge all Missourians to contact their Congressional representatives, especially Senator McCaskill, who staunchly supports the public option that would devastate Missouri’s economy.”
