On This Week, McCaskill promises unpopular public option
October 26, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY— This weekend, Sen Claire McCaskill was tasked with appearing on ABC’s This Week to defend the Democrats’ health care proposals. Notably, McCaskill reiterated her support for the public option and predicted her party would pass it over the objections of Missourians.
McCaskill first broadcast her support of the public option on Twitter in May. Throughout the summer, she tried and failed to convince Missourians to support the Democrats’ costly and burdensome plans. Despite protests across the state, McCaskill has not moderated her dogged support for the public option embraced by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama.
“A May tweet has become an October reality—and Claire McCaskill is now leading the charge for government-run health care,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “McCaskill masquerades as a deficit-hawk, but in reality, she has voted in lockstep with the Pelosi-Obama agenda to expand government control over our economy and our health care system. But instead of creating jobs or solving our health care crisis, these McCaskill-Pelosi-backed policies will do nothing but add to the crippling national debt.”
In addition to McCaskill, Robin Carnahan has also telegraphed her support for the public option and expressed her willingness to raise taxes to accomplish her goal of a government-takeover of our health care (KY3 blog, July 24, 2009).
“Along with Claire McCaskill, Robin Carnahan has indicated her support for Washington’s trillion-dollar experiment with our health care, and she has left the door open to a massive tax increase to pay for it,” said Smith. “Missouri’s children and grandchildren cannot afford to elect another U.S. Senator who supports every big-government program Nancy Pelosi can think of. The deficit and the debt are already spiraling out of control, and with the help of Sen. McCaskill and Senate wannabe Robin Carnahan, it will only get worse.”
