Carnahan allies betray her silence on Obama missile defense decision

Anti-defense group Council for a Livable World endorses, raises money for Carnahan

JEFFERSON CITY—The Obama Adminstration has announced that it will scrap plans to deploy missile defense capabilities in Eastern Europe. Robin Carnahan has not said a word on the issue, but once again, her liberal allies have betrayed her silence. This time, the Council for a Livable World, a far-left group dedicated to restricting America’s ability to defend itself from attack, has endorsed Carnahan and is even raising money for her campaign.

Like other Carnahan allies, the Council’s extreme positions are far outside the mainstream. Earlier this month, CLW Executive Director John Isaacs bluntly stated his position on missile defense: “I hope they kill the system.”

“Does Robin Carnahan agree with her liberal Washington allies that our nation’s entire missile defense program should be scrapped? Carnahan must think that it’s easier to remain silent than explain to Missourians why she supports policies that put America’s national security at risk,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “Once again, it has taken a radical group like the Council for a Livable World to expose Carnahan’s true agenda—like caving to Russia by weakening our missile defense capabilities.”

Sadly, Missourians can gain more insight into Robin Carnahan’s thinking from two paragraphs of the CLW endorsement than Carnahan has provided in the past seven months. An excerpt:

Carnahan believes that the U.S. should help lead the world toward nuclear disarmament. She supports President Obama’s goal of working toward a world free of nuclear weapons and advocates bilateral reductions of nuclear weapons by the United States and Russia.

She supports ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the President’s goal of securing and retrieving vulnerable nuclear-weapons usable materials worldwide. While she supports ensuring the safety and viability of our nuclear deterrent, she opposes building a new generation of nuclear weapons.
