MOGOP Statement on Nixon’s budget mismanagement

JEFFERSON CITY—Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party, issued the following statement about Jay Nixon’s mismanagement of the state budget:

“Leadership is about making difficult choices. Unfortunately, Governor Nixon has failed this basic test. For months, Nixon has consistently refused to rein in spending or make decisions he knew were necessary. Now, Missourians are paying the price.

“Nixon has repeatedly proven that he does not have a responsible, long-term vision for the state of Missouri. When everyone around him saw the looming budget crisis, Nixon was proposing hundreds of millions of dollars in new spending. He even admitted that he intended to live beyond our means and force ‘our kids and grandkids’ to ‘pay [the] debt off.’

“Now Nixon has run out of options, and he is being forced to cut the budget. Because of his lack of foresight, Nixon bears full responsibility for a crisis that could have been avoided if the budget had been properly managed.

“That, Governor Nixon, is no way to lead.”
