MRP Statement on Nixon’s attempt to bribe lawmakers

May 7, 2009

JEFFERSON CITY— In response to press reports that the Nixon administration was caught attempting to buy multiple lawmakers’ votes yesterday, David Cole, Chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, issued the following statement:

“Jay Nixon has a history of rewarding his campaign supporters with plum government positions and doling out extremely lucrative legal work to his top trial lawyer donors in a blatant pay-to-play fashion. Now he’s trying to bribe those who oppose his policies.  Nixon campaigned as a good-government crusader, but since assuming office, he has brazenly placed a ‘for-sale’ sign in the halls of state government.

“Throughout his career, Nixon has repeatedly tried to dodge accountability for his actions and has allowed others to take the blame.  Not this time.  Nixon must be held accountable for the actions for which he is ultimately responsible.

“The Missouri Republican Party is calling on Nixon to place Dustin Allison on leave pending a thorough investigation into these bribery allegations.  If true, Nixon and his administration should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
